Salt load transfer and changing salinities across a new causeway breach in Great Salt Lake: Implications for adaptive management

چکیده
Gilbert Bay, the largest embayment of expansive Great Salt Lake (GSL) in United States, is a productive aquatic system providing suite ecosystem services, both locally and across hemispheric flyways global aquaculture networks. Bay currently at record low stand elevated salinity attributable to coupled effects drought human water use basin. However, recent management berm breach mid-lake causeway provides unique adaptive tool mitigate harmful changes. The present study measured fluctuating salinities salt loads multi-year period changing management. Opening 2016 high spring runoff 2017 exported substantial portion load into adjacent Gunnison lowering salinity–elevation relationship Gilbert. bay has since returned nearly pre-breach levels with current now exceeding ecologically optimal range. chronicled movement relationships were used recommend short- long-term strategies for order sustain crucial face future variability, as well highlighting structural advantages GSL over other saline lakes experiencing anthropogenic loss.

How Do Changes to the Railroad Causeway in Utah’s Great Salt Lake Affect Water and Salt Flow?
Managing terminal lake elevation and salinity are emerging problems worldwide. We contribute to terminal lake management research by quantitatively assessing water and salt flow for Utah's Great Salt Lake. In 1959, Union Pacific Railroad constructed a rock-filled causeway across the Great Salt Lake, separating the lake into a north and south arm. Flow between the two arms was limited to two 4.6...
متن کاملGreat Salt Lake Selenium Standard
The Great Salt Lake ecosystem is widely recognized to be unique and to have very high environmental and commercial value. Great Salt Lake is recognized regionally, nationally, and hemispherically for its extensive wetlands, and its tremendous and often unparalleled values to migratory birds. These values are derived from the lake’s unique physical features, including its immense size, dynamic w...
متن کاملCrustal loading near Great Salt Lake, Utah
[1] Two sites of the BARGEN GPS network are located 30 km south of Great Salt Lake (GSL). Lake-level records since mid-1996 indicate seasonal water elevation variations of 0.3 m amplitude superimposed on a roughly ‘‘decadal’’ feature of amplitude 0.6 m. Using an elastic Green’s function and a simplified load geometry for GSL, we calculate that these variations translate into radial crustal load...
